“Just touch the hem of my garment”Pt. 1

I have had a thorn in my flesh for several years that effects me physically. The kind that causes a persons lifestyle to change. I have certainly grown closer to my Lord through it and am thankful for that. It has been a long journey to get to the point of being able to say that I am thankful for having this thorn. I am not one of those believers who believe that only the ones close to God aren’t sick. God uses many circumstances in our lives to fine tune the path He is leading us down.

I was visiting with my Dr., whom is a believer, and he shared a story of himself. He had been admitted to  the emergency room a few days before and was overcome with great anxiety from it. Holy Spirit said to his heart “just touch the hem of my garment”. Holy Spirit  had just said the same thing to me the week prior. At the time when He spoke it to me and when my Doc told me, my first thoughts were of healing, as of the lady in the bible of a bleeding disorder. But I knew in my heart it was much more than that…

The Jewish people were told by God in Numbers 15:37-41 “to make tassels  on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners. And you should have the tassel, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them, and that you may not follow  the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined, and that you may remember and do the all My commandments, and be holy for your God. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord your God.”

The “garment” that is spoken of in the Bible has changed style over the years as does our clothes do these days. This garment has been called many things such as “mantel, tallit, or outer garment.”  It went from being a rectangular shape to rounder in shape, which was called the tallit and used for a prayer shawl. The “hem of his garment” means “fringe, corner, tassel, or the boarder of a garment”. Even though the garment seems to have changed style and names through the years, the meaning of the garment has not.

In ancient times the “hem of the garment ” represented your identity. It showed who you were and what you stood for.  In Hebrew the word “wing ” and “corner of garment ” are the same.

RUTH 3:9 ” I am Ruth your maidservant. Take your maidservant under your wing….”(in other words she was saying to Boaz “I identify with you, protect me.” )

I SAMUEL 24:4-5  David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. Now it happened  afterward that David’s heart troubled him because he had cut Saul’s robe.( David could of killed him right there, but he knew he had sinned against God. Saul was His anointed King for the time being and the hem of  his outer garment  showed that)

I SAMUEL 15 In this chapter Saul rejects Gods word of instructions and Samuel rebukes him for doing so. As Samuel is leaving Saul reaches out and seizes the edge of his robe and tore it. This was used as a picture of the Kingdom of Israel being ripped away from Saul.

I KINGS 2:9 In this chapter Elijah will be leaving Elisha. Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted from him before he left. Elisha replied ,”Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” It was at this time Elijah was carried off to the heavens and his “mantel” was left for Elisha . WOW!

EZEKIEL 16:18 In this chapter God is showing His love for His people in Jerusalem by saying, ” When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine.”

MALACHI 4:2 In this book it closes with a prophecy of the Messiah that speaks of the corners of His garment…”But to you who fear My name, The Sun of Righteousness shall arise, With healing in His wings…”( so the root of the Messiah in His identity is healing…spiritual and physical)

When the woman and others that were sick touched “the hem of His garment” in Matthew, Mark, and  Luke they were identifying with Jesus, the Messiah. They were saying…”I want a relationship with you….I know who you are, I know who’s I am.” Jesus said to them,”your faith has made you well.” They knew what He required of them…to believe in Him, follow Him. No longer did they need to follow rules, laws and regulations… our obedience to Him is inwardly first, then outwardly.

Who do you identify with? This is what He wanted my full attention on. I have been pondering on it since…….
